crocheting & knitting in the 1940s

Two years after the war ended, Christian Dior introduce his 'New Look' in 1947

Skirt hems measure exactly 16 inches from the ground with tiny waists, a defined bustline and batwing sleeves and lots of extravagent fabrics..

This design was the reaction to years of restriction and making do and women loved it. During the next decade, the 1950's, this more exuberant style continued.

Bette Davis´s most famous filmed handwork must be the crocheted lace she worked on throughout the film, The Letter in 1940

She is seen here, crocheting on the set, alongside her stand-in, Sally Sage, who is knitting an Argyle sock. Davis´s character is crocheting and her supposed finished work are important elements in the film
